The Royal Mint
The Royal Mint is the official sovereign mint of the United Kingdom, in continuous operation since AD 886. It strikes the Britannia and Sovereign series. Britannia coins enjoy a unique status: as UK legal tender they are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for British residents.
The Royal Mint is one of the oldest continuously-operating mints in the world. It is owned by HM Treasury and is the sole producer of UK coinage.
The Britannia, struck since 1987 in gold and 1997 in silver, is one of the few sovereign coins with both VAT exemption (≥99.5% gold) and Capital Gains Tax exemption for UK residents — a rare double advantage.
Recent Britannia issues use a latex security feature: a fine pattern embedded in the polished field that catches light differently from a counterfeit.
